Extraterrestrial life

Life probably exists beyond Earth.

With next-generation telescopes, tiny space probes, and more, scientists aim to search for life beyond our solar system—and make contact.

Extraterrestrial life, life that may exist or may have existed in the universe outside of Earth. The search for extraterrestrial life encompasses many fundamental scientific questions. What are the basic requirements for life? Could life have arisen elsewhere in the solar system? Are there other planets like Earth? How likely is the evolution of intelligent life?

Extraterrestrial life is a hypothetical life which may occur outside of Earth and which did not originate on Earth. Such life might range from simple prokaryotes to intelligent beings and even sapient beings, possibly bringing forth civilizations which might be far more advanced than humanity.

Extraterrestrial life is life that may exist and originate outside the planet Earth, the only place in the universe currently known by humans to support life. Its existence is currently purely hypothetical as there is yet no evidence of any planets that can support life, or actual extraterrestrial life that has been widely accepted by the scientific community. Most scientists hold that if extraterrestrial life exists, its evolution would have occurred independently in different places in the universe.
